It is not your fault. It is the screen.

Subaru's 8-inch Harman Kardon screens use a gel layer to bond the touch panel to the display. Heat breaks it down, and a summer on an Adelaide dashboard is exactly what does it.

It shows up in three ways, often together:

  • Bubbles or a cloudy, rainbow sheen under the glass
  • Ghost touches: songs skipping, menus opening, calls you never dialled
  • Dead zones that stop responding to your finger

Common questions

Why is my Subaru screen bubbling?

The 8-inch Harman Kardon screen uses a gel layer to bond the touch panel to the display. Heat breaks that gel down, which shows up as bubbles, cloudy patches or a rainbow sheen under the glass. The display underneath is usually fine; it is the touch panel that has failed.

What is ghost touching?

The screen registers touches nobody made: it skips songs, changes the volume, opens menus or dials contacts while you drive. It is the same fault as the bubbling, and replacing the touch panel fixes it.

Is my car affected?

The fault is most common in 2018 to 2020 Outback and Liberty models with the 8-inch Harman Kardon screen. A quick test: if the picture is clear but the touch misbehaves, it is the touch panel, which is exactly what we replace. Other Subarus can have it too, so text us a photo if you are unsure.

How long does the repair take?

Around 2 hours. You drop the car off near Westfield West Lakes and pick it up the same morning or afternoon.

Do I need to go back to Subaru afterwards?

No. Your original head unit stays in the car, so there is no programming and your radio presets, Bluetooth pairings and settings are untouched. Dealers usually replace the whole head unit instead, which then has to be programmed to your car and costs several times more.
